Making (More) Music in Clara
Published: 13th May 2014
Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath have partnered with Ard Scoil Naofa Chiaran in Clara with after school guitar lessons delivered by Brendan Keeley.
Brendan is one of the many local musicians being trained by Music Generation in the Kodály approach to music education, and the project represents the first tentative steps into Music Generation’s new instrumental programme.
Brendan, whose professional profile is both international and exceptional, approaches the sessions by focusing on the young people, “ I always try to mix fun with music, I think they learn easier with some fun. If you allow children to learn the songs they want to learn, that they relate to, they practice more”. For many of the young people involved, this is their first time picking up a guitar and Brendan remarked, “I think it is fantastic that Music Generation is giving kids, who would not normally get a chance to learn music, an opportunity to learn it”
Principal at Ard Scoil Naofa Chiaran, Miriam Hickey is hugely supportive of the Music Generation programme, “The feedback from the students is very positive. Brendan is great at encouraging them and they have really enjoyed it. I am hoping it may inspire some of the first years to invest in a guitar during the summer in preparation for lessons next year.”
