This year’s National Heritage Week runs from August 17th to 25th and Offaly County Library Service’s Heritage Week Programme will see a range of events and activities taking place in a number of branches.
Introduction to Genealogy: a talk by Susan Chadwick MAPGI takes place on Tuesday, August 20th at 2 locations: Clara Library 4.00pm-5.00pm and again in Tullamore Central Library 6.30pm-7.30pm.
Clara Library will also be displaying a Selection of old photographs relating to Clara during Heritage Week.
In Tullamore Central Library, there will be a Genealogy Clinic with Susan Chadwick MAPGI on Wednesday, August 21st, 10.00am-1.00pm where you can get answers to your genealogy queries and tips to start your research. The clinic will take the form of free personal sessions of 15 minutes each and pre-booking is essential (contact Tullamore Central Library).
Also in Tullamore Central Library is Offaly in Bits & Bytes: a mouse-clicker's guide, a talk looking at some of the local history resources available online for free in Tullamore Central Library including local and national newspapers, Census records, Ordnance Survey maps and more. It takes place on Saturday, August 24th, 3.00pm-4.00pm.
Younger users of Tullamore Central Library (aged between 7 and 12) can test their historical mettle with our special Heritage Week Challenge, the National Treasure Quest. This involves searching the library to complete tasks and locate national sites, monuments and icons hidden throughout using the clues provided! There is a 1 hour time limit for the challenge and all who complete the Quest will gain a Questor's Certificate! The challenge will be running in Tullamore Central Library all through Heritage Week during library opening hours.
denderry Library’s programme features a Talk on Offaly Famine Stitch: Mary O’Connor, who sent a gift sample of the Offaly Famine Stitch to President Obama last St.Patrick’s Day, will give a talk on this famous stitch on Tuesday 20th August at 11.30am. All are welcome.
Edenderry Library will also hold an Exhibition of Irish Times Articles from the 1913 Lockout and an Exhibition of Lace & Craft Work by Eugenia Monica Stamati.
