PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON A LAOIS WALKING AND CYCLING STRATEGY

Published: 22nd November 2013

Walking and Cycling are healthy and sustainable ways of getting around. In preparing a Walking and Cycling Strategy for Laois, we need to know what Laois people think about walking and cycling. Laois County Council, Laois Partnership and Laois Sports Partnership are preparing a Laois Walking and Cycling Strategy to examine opportunities for encouraging walking and cycling.

The HSE Health Promotion Department and the Get Ireland Walking Initiative are also helping prepare this Strategy.

HAVE YOUR SAY!
The purpose of this public consultation is to get a sense of what people think about walking and cycling in Laois: What kind of walking or cycling trails or routes are needed in Laois? Comment: Are more footpaths and more cycle lanes along roads needed OR should the focus be on providing more walking trails and cycling trails away from cars.

Where should walking or cycling trails and routes be provided in Laois? Comment: Should they be concentrated in Portlaoise which has a high population and lots of school and commuter traffic OR in quieter rural areas with active community groups and potential for family-friendly and tourist recreational routes

What improvements should be made to existing cycle and walking networks? Comment: Wider footpaths with better quality surfaces, OR join up patchy cycle lanes OR more rest areas and signage along rural trails

Do you think funding should be concentrated on improving walking and cycling infrastructure or on promotional campaigns to increase levels of walking and cycling?
