RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s Midlands Première
Published: 8th November 2013
On December 4th in the Tullamore Court Hotel, Midland audiences will have the unique opportunity to see Ireland’s premier orchestra perform on their doorstep, with special guest soloist Tasmin Little.
Adding to this special occasion is the exciting opportunity for the young members of the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra to receive mentoring from members of the orchestra in the weeks leading up to the concert and a pre-concert performance by the youth orchestra.
Presented by Wide Open Music and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra guest soloist, Tasmin Little - described by one critic as having an “intoxicating blend of power, passion, poetry and drop-dead beautiful playing”- is one of the finest violin soloists on the international solo circuit.
Wide Open Music and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra have had numerous sell-out performances in the recent past and this tour sees a new partnership with Offaly & Westmeath County Arts Offices and Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath Programme.
With a top international solo violinist and one of Ireland’s leading conductors, Fergus Sheil, the focus of these concerts is on vivid, colourful, dynamic and rhythmic music – mostly inspired by dance. The programme includes The Chairman Dances – Subtitled Foxtrot for Orchestra, Stravinsky’s dazzling ballet music The Firebird and one of the best known and loved pieces for violin and orchestra, Bruch’s violin concerto which will be performed by Tasmin Little. Tasmin has firmly established herself as one of the leading international violinists of today. She has performed on every continent in some of the most prestigious venues of the world and has made several acclaimed recordings in addition to frequent appearances at major festivals such as the BBC Proms.
In the weeks leading up to the concert, members of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Fergus Sheil will visit the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra to help coach the young musicians.
Since 2006 under the Baton of Conductor Vincent Hunt, the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra has gone from strength to strength. Having performed in Belfast, Germany and the National Concert Hall the orchestra draws players from Westmeath, Offaly, Longford, Roscommon, Meath, Kildare & Laois. The youth orchestra are preparing a programme to showcase their work which they’ll perform with Tasmin Little as a short 30 minute pre-concert performance on the night of the RTÉ NSO concert.
“The Arts Offices of Offaly and Westmeath, together with Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath are delighted to be in a position to partner with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra to deliver a series of master classes to the young people of the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra. This is an extraordinary opportunity for our young musicians, to learn from and play with some of the finest in the country. Having the opportunity to play alongside the RTÉ NSO on Dec 4th in Tullamore, will make evident to the community in general, the caliber of young musicianship we have in the Midlands and the importance of nurturing and supporting their development.” Sinéad O'Reilly, Offaly County Arts Officer.
The concert tour and educational programme is supported by The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Offaly and Westmeath County Councils and Offaly/Westmeath Music Education Partnership.
