The Irish Workhouse, Past & Present

The workhouses in Ireland operated for a period of 80 years, from the early 1840s to the early 1920s. The workhouse or poorhouse was the last resort of the destitute poor and for society’s ‘rejects’. Each area had a workhouse, with 163 being built in total. The workhouse was both hated and feared.
