Celebrate All-Ireland Poetry Day with a Creative Writing Workshop in Poetry with Seamus Cashman.
will hold poetry workshops with Transition Year students in The CBS Secondary school and Scoil Chriost Ri, Portlaoise on Thursday 4th October 2012. The workshops will be in three parts: [a] open discussion with question & answer, and readings; [b] thoughts on reading poetry; and [c] the core item which is 'writing a poem': the making of a poem by each participant on a suggested topic, followed by individual readings (optional) and comment. Seamus Cashman's published poetry collections are: Carnival (Monarchline, 1988); Clowns & Acrobats (Wolfhound Press, 2000); and That Morning will Come: new and selected poems (SalmonPoetry, 2007). He has just completed a book length poem which will be published in 2013. In addition to his own writing and poetry, Cashman currently works as a publishing and writing consultant. He taught in Tanzania in the 1960s, and he founded Wolfhound Press in 1974 and it became one of Ireland's leading Irish literary and cultural publishing house while he was publisher there until 2001. He facilitates writing workshops and does residencies on the Development Education creative writing projects with Poetry Ireland, including facilitating a scriptwriting project on child labour at Zion Primary School in 2005, co-directing the resulting schoolchildren’s film, Stitched. A highly regarded anthologist for young readers, he co-edited Irish Poems for Young People (with Bridie Quinn; 1975, 2000) and he commissioned and edited the award winning Something Beginning with P: new poems from Irish poets (O’Brien Press, 2004). In addition to his work as a poet, Cashman is a publishing and writing consultant. He lives in Portmarnock, County Dublin but is originally from Cork.
