The Irish Workhouse, Past & Present
The workhouses in Ireland operated for a period of 80 years, from the early 1840s to the early 1920s. The workhouse or poorhouse was the last resort of the destitute poor and for society’s ‘rejects’. Each area had a workhouse, with 163 being built in total. The workhouse was both hated and feared.

It is a 13 km long stretch of dry canal through varied habitats. The walk starts from Ballycommon at 2pm or alternatively there is a bus leaving the Harbour in Kilbeggan at 1.30pm.
