Offaly Play Day this Sunday 29th September in Tullamore Town Football Club, Axis Business Park, Tullamore
Playday is the national day designated for play, traditionally celebrated in Offaly on the last Sunday in September. This year’s event will take place on Sunday 29th September in the grounds of Tullamore Town Football Club, Axis Business Park, Tullamore from 2.00pm to 5.00pm.
On Monday 23rd September Offaly Play Day 2013 was launched by Chairperson of Offaly County Council, Sinead Moylan Ryan in Kilcormac Community Playground with the children of Kilcormac Community Playgroup.
Speaking at the launch Councillor Moylan Ryan said that ‘Play is integral to children’s lives. It is the foundation for all learning in the early years. It allows children the opportunity to be creative, noisy, exuberant, messy and inquisitive about the world around them. As Chairperson of the Offaly County Council, I have a role in promoting services for all and Play Day is a fantastic service to families’.
The aim of National Play Day is to help increase public awareness of the importance of play Promoting play is a key policy response to improving outcomes for children and supporting children’s physical and social development. Play is integral to children’s lives. National Play Day is an opportunity to link activities already undertaken by Local Authorities and many other locally based providers, youth and sporting organisations.
As well as a celebration of a child's right to play, Playday highlights the importance of play in children’s lives. Play Day promotes the idea of families playing together and the event aims to show how adults can support children’s play with a small amount of effort and little expense.
The event in Offaly will be hosted by Offaly County Council in Conjunction with Offaly County Childcare Committee and Offaly Sports Partnership. All activities are free of charge and the afternoon will cater for children up to 12 years so everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the fun. BUT ALL children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Children should have the time, freedom and space to play outdoors as outdoor play is crucial for their health, well-being and happiness, so weather permitting there will be outdoor activities galore!

- Music & Movement
- Magic Shows
- Circus Skills
