Excursion by Artist Pat Byrne

Published: 20th August 2013

The Arthouse Gallery, Stradbally, Co Laois will host a new exhibition by artist Pat Byrne titled “Excursion” to open on Thursday 5th September. The exhibition will be launched by Artist Jock Nichol. The work will include new work from a three month residency with Nes Artist Residency in Skagastrond, Iceland.

“The core theme of my painting is playing with scale. This is achieved by placing locations, landscapes and scenes in, on or around oversized everyday objects creating juxtapositions that give my work a surrealist nature. I tend to arrive at this point through the use of sketches, collages and photography, experimenting with images to find what works well together.

As well as the visual element this recent body of work has underlying layers that look at issues and occurrences of our surrounding environments and areas either historical or as a result of progress, both natural and through the impact of human activity.
The goal of working this way is primarily to simply have fun with the imagery while the secondary aim is to subtly portray the tones that run beneath the aesthetic.”

In January 2011 Pat was awarded a residency from Laois County Council at the Mountrath Artist Studio and accommodation. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art and Design in 2009 and in 2010 received a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Fine Art. He held his first and second solo exhibitions, SHAPE at Leixlip Library Gallery in August 2011 and Corrosion at MadArt Gallery, Dublin in May 2012. He had his first experience curating in July 2011 when he organised Occupied, a group exhibition in a vacant building in Mountrath. He also helped run several workshops between Portlaoise and Stradbally over the duration of the Mountrath residency and was awarded a place on the Artist in School Scheme in 2012. Pat collaborated with the artists in The Arthouse Studios to build an installation for the Electric Picnic. The piece built was featured on the cover of Midlands Art and Culture Magazine Issue 16.

Excursion opens on Thursday 5th September and runs until the 4th October. The artist will give a presentation and talk at the Arthouse and Library, Stradbally, on Friday 20th September at 7pm. (Culture Night) All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
