A new Heritage Plan for County Laois is being prepared and all residents of the county are invited to make their voices heard. A Draft Heritage Plan to cover the period 2013 – 2018 is available, and anyone with an interest in the built, natural or cultural heritage of Laois can make a submission.
This will be the third Heritage Plan for County Laois, and building on the achievements of previous plans, It will aim to identify, conserve, raise awareness and promote enjoyment of all aspects of the built, natural and cultural heritage of the county. The draft plan has been prepared by the Laois Heritage Forum, a group representing community and voluntary groups and statutory agencies with an interest in the heritage of Laois. For the purposes of the Laois Heritage Plan, using the National Heritage Act as a guide, heritage is considered to include monuments, archaeology, heritage objects, architecture, flora, fauna, wildlife habitats, landscapes, seascapes, wrecks, geology, heritage gardens and parks and inland waterways.
The deadline for submissions has been extended to Friday 31st May 2013. Submissions can be made in writing, via email or online, through a questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.com/laoisheritageplan. A public meeting to outline the development of the plan so far and discuss any issues will be held in Abbeyleix Heritage House on Monday 27th May at 8pm.
