The Artists in Schools programme run by the Arts Office, Laois County Council is up and running in a number of schools in the county again this year. On a recent visit to Killadooley NS, Arts Office staff got a chance to see some of the wonderful work produced by the young artists at the school
The artists in schools programme funds an artists’ residency, where the artists visits the school over a number of weeks to work directly in the classroom. Killadooley is one of nine schools taking part in the 2014 programme. The schools are selected through an application process, looking at the quality and overall artistic benefits of the processes to the students . Artist Caoimhe Arrigan is working on a visual arts project with a theme of the four elements; Earth, Water, Fire and Air. Caoimhe is a highly accomplished artist and art tutor. The principal Mai Phelan was generous in her praise of the artist and said that the students really looked forward each week to the artists visit. The school entrance hall and classroom is a riot of colour with paintings of all aspects of the four elements. The students are getting to work with different mediums including watercolour, inks, acrylic on canvas and palette knife painting, A final exhibition of the work will be presented in the school at the end of the residency for family and friends to enjoy.
