Laois County Council Summer Arts Programme

The Arts Office, Laois County Council announce their fun packed arts programme for children and young people running in the County during the Summer. The programme includes weeklong workshops in art & craft, dance, creative writing, and pottery at a cost of €30 for the week.

Kicking off in Portlaoise with Fun DANCE Workshops with dance artist Erica Borges at the Dunamaise Arts Centre running from Mon 1st to Fri 5th July from 11am to 1pm , for ages 9 to 15. Erica will explore the basic elements of dance, contemporary dance and Hip Hop dance techniques and skills. No experience is necessary just a love of dancing.

Also in Portlaoise artist Conor Brennan will deliver workshops in painting, drawing and clay sculpture in St Francis School from Mon 15th to Fri 19th July from 11am to 1pm for ages 7 to 9 and from 2pm to 4pm for ages 10 to 12. Conor’s workshops are designed to develop the students understanding of the material they are working with while also maintaining a high level of enjoyment and a sense of fun.

And in Portlaoise for all our budding young writing enthusiasts, writer Ann Egan will hold a week of Creative Writing workshop s in St Francis School, Portlaoise from Mon 15th to Fri 19th July from 11am to 1pm for ages 12 to 15 years. Ann will help promote an enjoyment and understanding of Creative Writing. Ann will guide the participants into writing their own stories and poems during an enjoyable week of writing in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere.

In Portarlington artist Siobhan Keogh will run another fun packed week of creative art and craft workshops in St. Patricks Boys NS, from Mon 8th July –Fri 12th July from 11am to 1pm for ages 7 to 9 and from 2pm to 4pm for ages 10 to 12.

In Mountmellick artist Siobhan Keogh will run workshops in creative Art in the MDA Centre from Mon 15th July to Fri 19th July from 2pm-4pm for ages 7 to 12 . During her workshops in Portarlington and in Mountmellick artist Siobhan Keogh will explore painting, drawing, cutting , collage and sculpture, with an emphasis on having fun while you are learning new skills.

In Abbeyleix artist Orla McDonagh will use portraiture as one of the ways of exploring and creating art for her week of workshops in the Abbeyleix Youth Café, Fr. Breen Park running from Mon 22nd to Fri 26th July from 11am to 1pm for ages 7 to 9 and from 2pm to 4pm for age 10 to 12. Orla will guide the young people through the elements of basic proportions and how to create a realistic pencil portrait followed by an experimental modern self portrait in combined materials.

In Mountrath the talents of Fins Pottery tuition will be available for young people to have fun with pottery. Running in the Kiln Lane, Community Centre from Monday 8th to 12th July from 11am to 1pm for ages 7 to 12 and a second class from 2pm to 4pm for ages 7 to 12. Fins Pottery will help each child to produce a number of clay pieces in a fun and exciting way. During this process the children will have the opportunity to explore the many different techniques of creating with clay.

The Arthouse Stradbally is the venue for our final week of workshops, as visiting artist in residence Stefanie Bruning will deliver a very intriguing programme of workshops titled “Clam Tree, Big-Eyed Fish and Wooden Bird‘ running from Mon 29th July to Fri 2nd August from 11am to 1pm for ages 7 to 9 and from 2pm to 4pm for ages 10 to 12. The work will include creating exotic landscape sceneries and fantastic animals with the techniques of FROTTAGE and COLLAGE. Exploring different materials and their surfaces/textures, using objects from our shared environment and a technique of transferring relief patterns to paper by rubbing with a pencil. The collection of these frottage pieces will then be the main material for the creation of colllages.

The Music Generation Laois summer programme has an exciting line up of workshops that includes a School of Rock and Pop, a Drum Camp and an Improvised Music and Jazz Camp. For more info contact Rosa on T: 057 8664078 or E: musicgenerationlaois@laoiscoco.ie

The Arts Office also facilitate Arts Workshops in July as part of Laois County Councils’ social inclusion policy as follows: Art Workshops in the MDA Mountmellick, in association with the Youth Development Centre from the 15th-19th July. Pottery Workshops in Mountrath in association with Respond from the 8th-12th July.
