Laois Graveyards Survey to be Launched

The Survey of Graveyards in Laois, carried out by Laois County Council, with the assistance of the Heritage Council, will be formally launched next Wednesday February 27th at 8pm, in Killeen Community Centre, Killeen, Maganey. The report will be launched by Cllr Paul Mitchell, Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council.

The survey covered all burial grounds in the County, including modern and historic graveyards, children’s burial grounds and famine graveyards, recording over 200 burial grounds throughout County Laois.

Copies of the report will be available at the launch, and the report in two volumes is also available to download for free from the Laois Heritage Website www.laois.ie/heritage.

Killabban Monastic Site
On the same evening, a presentation on the important monastic site and graveyard at Killabban near Killeen will be given by Caimin O’Brien. The talk, examining the history of the site and its importance in the history of Laois, will be followed by a general discussion on the future management and conservation of the site. Anyone with an interest in the history and archaeology of the area is invited to attend and contribute to the discussion.
