Longford Walking Festival & Cairn Hill Challenge

Longford Tourism are pleased to announce the countys’ first walking festival,l which will take place on Sat 3rd and Sunday 4th May. Longfords’ first walking festival the sites are new territory for many people who may not be familiar with the diversity of great walks and trails around the county of Longford.

There is a dedicated website www.longfordwalkingfestival.com which has all the information you may require, as well as downloadable maps of the walking sites. Maps and brochures will be available on the days of the festival as well.

This promises to be a great weekends fun culminating with either a 2k or a 5k walk along the recently restored Royal Canal Way. The Richmond Inn will be open for business serving refreshments as well as providing entertainment afterwards in the quaint village of Clondra, situated at Richmond Harbour, the last harbour along the route of the canal.

Also taking place on this May bank holiday weekend is The Cairn Hill Challenge now in its second year, https://www.facebook.com/cairnhillchallenge2014 The Cairn Hill Challenge is a 10 mile or 10k event taking place on Sunday 4th May around the historical village of Drumlish and the highest point in County Longford, Cairn Hill. This is an excellent walking/jogging/running event, held in aid of Gaels UTD underage football club. While the 10k makes its way via the lower face of Cairn Hill, the more challenging 10 mile run will circumvent the Hill with both races then progressing by Kilmahon, Derawley and back up through the village of Drumlish to its finish at the Community Centre.

The event is A.A.I. Certified and Chip timed. Online registration should be made at www.precisiontiming.net. This walk/jog/run is not only a physical challenge also but introduces participants to the wonderful scenery of North Longford as well as the historical village of Drumlish with its friendly residents and excellent hospitality.

This is sure to be a great day so get your walking/running shoes on and come along to County Longford for the Walking Festival and The Cairn Hill Challenge ! There’s something for everyone !
