The Peatlands & People project announced today by Minister for Climate Action Eamon Ryan, will establish The Peatlands Centre of Excellence, Just Transition Accelerator programme & a new Discovery Attraction in the Midlands. The project will be led by Bord na Mona & supported by the EU Life Fund.
The ‘Peatlands and People’ project is a major national initiative which will contribute to the long-term implementation of Ireland's Climate Action Plan.
With major funding from the European Commission, it will highlight the power of peatlands to effect significant climate action wins.
Bord na Móna will lead the new peatlands initiative in partnership with NPWS; Dept of Housing, Local Government and Heritage; EPA; NUI Galway; ERINN Innovation Ltd; and additional co-financing from Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
The project follows closely after Bord na Móna commenced a major peatland rehabilitation initiative with the support of climate action funding from the Irish Government.
Bord na Móna has recently called a permanent end to peat harvesting as it moves to become a climate solutions business focused on renewable energy, peatland rehabilitation and recycling.
