National Drawing Day in Laois

The Arthouse, Stradbally, was a hive of activity on Saturday May 17th, as National Drawing Day was celebrated in great style.Young and old alike had the opportunity to create some lovely artwork under the watchful eye of three professional artists, Gemma Guihan, Lorraine Walsh and Mary Cassidy.

The visitors had the opportunity to create a still life painting, using water colours, an animation and Japanese drawing. Everyone went home with unique creations and happy memories of a busy and constructive mornings work.

“Works and Interactions”
The Arthouse Gallery Stradbally will host a new exhibition of work presented by Cóilín Rush, Artist in Residence 2012/2013 at the Arthouse Stradbally titled “Works and Interactions” to open on Thursday 30th May at 6pm. This exhibition is the culmination of a 12 month residency by Cóilín who received the NCAD Graduate Bursary Award 2012/2013 funded through the Per Cent for Art Scheme. The exhibition includes collaborative works from Cultúrbug, a community art group.

“Works and Interactions” opens Thursday 30th May and runs until Friday 28th June at the Arthouse, Stradbally, Co. Laois. Exhibition opening hours: Tuesday – Friday, 1 – 4.30 p.m. or by appointment by contacting Vernon on 057 86641740 or email: artsoff@laoiscoco.ie.

Workshops in Painting for Adults
Following on the successful Spring Art Course run by Gemma Guihan in the Arthouse recently, she is conducting one commencing on 5th June at 11am-1.00pm in the Library, Stradbally. Gemma will lead the students in the techniques of oil painting, acrylics and drawing. It is suitable for beginner and more advanced adult students.

The fee for the 6 weeks is €120 and participants are to bring their own materials.

The course will conclude with an exhibition at the Arthouse Gallery.

Gemma Guihan is a full-time practising artist based in her studio at The Arthouse, Stadbally Co. Laois. She has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy Summer Exhibition and Eigse Open Submission Carlow. She has had several solo exhibitions at The Molesworth Gallery Dublin and The Dunamaise Theatre and Centre for the Arts Portlaoise. Her work is in private and public collections in Ireland, England, Finland, United States and Austrailia.

Children’s Summer Arts Programme
The Arts Office will run a week of art workshops at the Arthouse, Stradbally with artist Stefanie Bruning titled “Clam Tree, Big-Eyed Fish and Wooden Bird” to run from 29th July to 2nd August – from 11am to 1pm for ages 7-9 and from 2pm to 4pm for ages 10-12, costing €30.

The workshops will include; creating exotic landscape sceneries and fantastic animals with the techniques of FROTTAGE and COLLAGE. Exploring different materials and their surfaces/textures, using objects from our shared environment and a technique of transferring relief patterns to paper by rubbing with a pencil. The collection of these frottage pieces will then be the main material for the creation of colllages.
