Offaly 2016…… your invitation to participate

Published: 19th January 2015

In 2016 we will remember 1916 and that pivotal period in our history. It is a time to reflect on the past 100 years and to re-imagine our future, building a new legacy of hope, belief, possibility and confidence.

A team, comprising of elected members and staff, in Offaly County Council will be coordinating events in Offaly to mark this year and will be the link to Ireland 2016, the national office in the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

We would like to hear your ideas and suggestions as to how Offaly 2016 can be remembered, reconciled, presented and imagined.

  • Do you know a local story from 1916 that deserves to be told?
  • How can we best listen, learn and reflect on the state of our republic and our relationship with the world?
  • How can we best release the creativity and imagination of our people, especially our young people, to ask what the next 100 years will bring for Ireland and what kind of country we want to be?
  • How can we best encourage families, friends and communities to come together to reflect on the past, to celebrate our achievements and to imagine the future?

We would like to hear your ideas and suggestions and welcome submissions in writing, by email or by post on or before 4pm Thursday February 19th 2015.

While there is an indication of some funding being available for local events or projects, we have yet to receive clarification on the extent or parameters of this fund. However, gauging the level of interest locally and in advance will help us shape a reflective and imaginative programme for Offaly 2016.

To make a submission, write to Offaly 2016, Corporate Services, Offaly County Council, Charleville Road, Tullamore, Co. Offaly or email offaly2016@offalycoco.ie
