Laois Youth Theatre at the Dunamaise Arts Centre

Published: 9th May 2013

The Dunamaise Arts Centre saw Stradbally Youth Theatre put in a remarkable performance on Saturday 4th May. The members of the youth theatre presented DNA, a dark comedy by Dennis Kelly, directed by Siobhán Coffey and Trevor Mulhare.

The play explores the personal cost we pay to remain within the complex popularity circle, after a bunch of teenagers have done something bad. The actors commanded the stage from the outset and held the attention of the audience throughout this very powerful and disturbing play. The young people truly inhabited this murky realm, remaining in character the whole time. Artist Cóilín Rush’s imaginative video work complemented the stage work beautifully.

Feedback from the audience was very positive, Stradbally Youth Theatre taking bows to rapturous applause and a standing ovation. Comments were made regarding how well the sparse set (two car seats and a tyre swing) contributed to the menace that the actors portrayed and also commented on how they had successfully managed to negotiate some very intense moments. The addition of a shopping trolley, a mouse, a blow-up fish and a pogo stick, to name but a few, provided some light relief in this adult-free zone. All-in-all a brave and impressive performance from Stradbally Youth Theatre.

Laois Youth Theatre is run by the Arts Office, Laois County Council.
