Birr Castle Gardens & Demesne

“In the heart of Ireland, a green jewel of world renown.” Eliana Fenoli, Great Gardens of Europe

Travel back in time with the Parson’s family, Earls of Rosse, to when Birr Castle was a hub of scientific discovery and innovation. Ireland’s Historic Science Centre reveals the wonders of early photography, astronomy and engineering, with a special emphasis on the brilliant design and assembly of the world famous Great Telescope.

Discover astronomical instruments, cameras, photographs, and a replica of the darkroom used by Mary Countess of Rosse in the middle 1800’s.

Also on display is the electrical and engineering equipment belonging to Charles Parsons, inventor of the steam powered turbine.

Spend a day exploring the beautifully landscaped and natural parkland at Birr Castle Demesne, with its tranquil waterfall, lake and rivers. The award winning Millennium Gardens are surrounded by the romantic Hornbeam Cloister walk. It also proudly houses the tallest box hedges in the world.

Standing 39 feet tall, the tallest treehouse in Ireland is the centrepiece for the new adventure area at Birr Castle Demesne. It features tree decks linked by rope bridges, secret tunnels, a giant bouncy pillow, scramble nets and a picnic area.
