Longford students win World Design of the year

Two young students from Longford, representing Cnoc Mhuire Secondary School have won the Overall Prize for ‘World Design of the Year’ prize at the Junk Kouture World Final in Abu Dhabi. Solomon Eduard and Joshua Osabuehien from Cnoc Mhuire Granard, along with their teacher Charmaine Hetherton, flew out to Abu Dhabi where they competed against sixty other finalists from Dublin, London, Paris, Milan, New York and Abu Dhabi.

You could not meet two finer lads and the way they have carried themselves over the last year is an absolute credit to themselves and their families.

On a facebook post from Cnoc Mhuire School, it said “You could not meet two finer lads and the way they have carried themselves over the last year is an absolute credit to themselves and their families. We are so proud of you lads and the work you put in. It’s been an absolute joy to follow your journey. You represented the school so well in the Bord Gais Theatre in the National final and the performance this evening in the Ethiad was just class.”

They paid tribute to the hard work by teacher Year Charmaine Hetherton, who they said, has played such a huge part in providing a creative outlet for those most artistic of kids in the school. “The kids are very very lucky to have a teacher of this calibre and care and thanks again for all the work.”

The inspiration and theme behind their costume is to make people aware that we all have to try and live more sustainably if our planet is to have any chance of survival. Junk Kouture is a competition for secondary school students where they are asked to design their own weird and wonderful costumes, entirely from waste materials. Two former secretaries from the school (Anne and Lorraine), made the long trip over to support their friend Charmaine in the Ethihad Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
