People’s Discovery Visitor Attraction: A €30m Sustainable Gem mooted for the Midlands

In a bid to transform eco-tourism in the Midlands, plans for a ground-breaking €30 million visitor experience, the People’s Discovery Visitor Attraction, are in development. Nestled in the heart of Ballaghurt Bog in Co. Offaly, the visionary project would centre on sustainability and environmental education. The project is led by Peatlands and People in collaboration with University of Galway, aiming to redefine tourism while championing ecological consciousness.

The proposed site, spanning 5 hectares and owned by Bord na Mona, holds the promise of becoming a world-class destination akin to the renowned Eden Project in Cornwall. Located close to the village of Ballinahown, the proposed peatland site is within easy reach of Athlone, Clonmacnoise, and Tullamore, and would aim to become a year-round destination for visitors from Ireland and across the world.

From event and exhibitions spaces to Ireland’s Climate House

Central to the plan is a 3,600 square metre Visitor Centre with a range of offerings. From event spaces to exhibition halls, the attraction promises a multifaceted experience for visitors. Leading the attractions will be Ireland’s very own Climate House, an innovative space dedicated to showcasing sustainable practices and solutions.

Envisioned as a beacon of sustainability, the People’s Discovery Visitor Attraction will serve as a testament to the power of eco-conscious design. The exhibition spaces will feature products and solutions from partners in the sustainability and environmental sectors, inviting visitors to explore and engage with cutting-edge ideas.

Peatlands Centre of Excellence

Central to the attraction’s ethos is the Peatlands Centre of Excellence, a hub for training workshops and research initiatives. Here, visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the significance of peatlands in combating climate change, fostering a deeper understanding of our role in preserving these vital ecosystems.

Anticipated to welcome up to 385,000 visitors annually, the project has the potential to be transformative for tourism in the region. With the creation of 130 jobs and an estimated €12.3 million injection into the surrounding community, the People’s Discovery Visitor Attraction is poised to be a catalyst for growth and prosperity in the Midlands.
