New Glamping site proposed for Laois

A new glamping site could be on it’s way to the Slieve Bloom Mountains, County Laois. A planning application for ten glamping pods has been lodged to Laois County Council.

The proposed development was made by John Maher for Cappanagraigue, Clonaslee on the Maher family farm. He is looking to “construct a glamping development consisting of 10 self contained glamping pods, communal building containing reception and showers/toilets, renovation and extension to existing cottage as part of the development, waste water treatment system and polishing filter and new site entrance and all associated works”

The pods will be timber framed, chalet style structures with self contained cooking, washing and toilet facilities. Each pod has the capacity to sleep two adults, with a kingsize bed. One pod would be also wheelchair accessible. It would be open from Easter to October. A planning decision is due in mid December.

In the Midlands region there are a variety of Glamping sites to choose from that have become very successful, family-run operations. In Laois, a glamping development called the Pond Beach Resort is coming to Errill on the same site as the Ranch Cabin which is already a popular glamping spot run by Iveta Melgaile and Patrick Bowe. Double award winning Glamping Under the Stars located in Cullenagh, just outside Stradbally County Laois is run by the Fingleton family, with bell tents, wood lodges, or shepherd’s hut to choose from.

In Westmeath, Glasson Glamping Farm has become a very popular spot located at Tonagh Farm in Glasson. They have accommodation from the Big Green and Red Bus, to a Lakeview apartment, a Stage Coach, Wagons, Pods, Huts, shower facilities and a large kitchen area. Giltraps in Kinnitty County Offaly have camping bays, six Log Cabins and a Mongolian Yurt. And in Longford, on the outskirts of Drumlish, Bramblewick House offers two beautiful ‘Shepherd’s Huts’.

Who says we cant have glamour when we’re camping? There is certainly a great opportunity for new glamping/camping areas in the Slieve Bloom mountains, especially with the opening of the brand new Mountain Bike Trails there. What better way to experience and discover the hidden wells, little streams and abandoned cottages of the Slieve Blooms, than immersing yourself in nature.
